A Study on Weaning Practice for Babies at Suweon


Abstract
The purposes of this study were to find out of weaning practice and related things. The contents of this survey are the feeding method, experience of breast-feeding, duration of breastfeeding, kinds of supplementary diets, health condition after weaning, and the sources of knowledge-acquirement about weaning.
This survey was performed by interview and questionaire with 937 mothers at Suweon area who had babies of 3 to 24 months of age. These that were surveyed were not only relatively cultivated, but also financially satisfactory.
1. The main feeding method in the group of the month-age, between 3 and 6 months breast-feeding -only took charge of 57. 1%, between 7 and 12 months the mixed feeding (breastmilk+others)51.6%, between 13 and 18 months the artificial feeding (food except breastmilk) 76. 1%, and between 19 and 24 months artifical 81. 8% also.
The instance depending on only the mother¢¥s milk was not all after one year of age.
2. Distribution by the experience of breast-feeding showed that non-breastfed mothers took charge of 11%, the women weaned 36.0%, the breastfeeding now 53. 1% and the mothers who have breastfed during a certain peroid 89. 1 0.
3. The mean duration of breastfeeding was 12.8¡¾4.7 months.
4. The main causes that they have never experienced breastfeeding said that the lack of amount
occupied 51.0%, the reversion to their job 19.6%, and the mother¢¥s illness 18.6%.
5. The chief circumstances that they have experienced breastfeeding for a long time (over one and
half year) showed as the following.a. Without a justifiable reason (25.8%)
b. According to advice by the aged of their household (24.2%)
c. In order to prevent conception (19.4%)
d. Children did not wean away from mother¢¥s breast (16. 1%)
e. Perhaps being fond of breastfeeding for a long time (14.5%)
6. The frequency by using the supplementary diets showed that egg took possession of 81.6%, gruel 52.9 % and cooked rice 52.9%. By each group of the month-age, the group between 3 and 6 months said that egg occupied 65.3%; moreover between 7 and 12 months, egg (78.5%) and gruel (59.7 % ) In the group between 13 and 18 months said that egg took charge of 80.8%, rice 79.9% and gruel 69. 5%. Besides, commercial weaning diets took possession of 52.4%, fruits or vegetables 52.1% and cereal 51.8%. In the group between 19 and 24 months, rice (97.9% ), egg (83.9% ), biscuits (76.9%), fruits or vegetables (69.9%) and bread (55.9%).
7. In the process of weaning, some of babies were injured for health, the chief cause was diarrhea. 8. The knowledge related to weaning was mainly acquired from the publications (Guidebook for nursing, magazines for women, etc.) 44.9% and hospitals or clinics 30.6%.
